Science in Candy Land

With Halloween just gone by, parents- are you having a headache wondering what to do with all that leftover candy? Here is a healthy way to have fun with candy, without cavities involved, or your children holding a grudge because "I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Halloween Candy"

Never fear, science is here! Please enjoy this short but fun science activity- Science in Candy Land!

What You Will Need:

1. Skittles

2. Small Cup of Hot Water

3. 1 Bowl

Instructions:

Step 1: Place the skittles around the inside of the bowl

Step 2 : Slowly pour the hot water in the middle of the bowl

Step 3: Wait for the magic to happen!

What Can We Teach Our Children:

1. Academics:

  • Colors of the Rainbow: Skittles come in many colors of the rainbow: red, green, yellow, purple, etc.

2. Worldly Knowledge:

  • Colors of Fruits and its Taste: Oranges are the color orange and they taste tangy; Lemons are yellow and taste sour

  • Being Careful with Hot objects: Teach your children to handle hot things with care and always be aware when there are hot objects in their environment. It's also okay to ask for an adult for help when there are hot objects involved!

3. Language:

  • Spatial Concept: Line the Skittles inside the bowl, around the bowl, and pour the water in the middle of the bowl.

  • Quantity: Before you fill up the bowl, it is empty. After you line up the bowl with skittles, it becomes full.

Your kids are bound to be so excited when they see the results, they will want to see what else might happen with other kinds of candy! Who knows what other cool effects they may discover!

Have Fun!
